Trading Conditions & MoveProtect for Vehicles
1st Move International Limited, trading as AutoShippers, is a member of the British International Freight Association (BIFA). Our services are provided under the BIFA Standard Trading Conditions, 2025 Edition, together with any applicable additional terms agreed with our customers.
Our standard trading conditions are set out below. Please read the introduction and key points, the full BIFA conditions, and the MoveProtect Addendum for Vehicles where applicable.
Introduction and summary of our terms and conditions
We are bound by our trading body to ensure that both us as a company and you as the customer understand and agree to our trading conditions before we can ship your vehicle. These trading conditions are approved by our governing body The British International Freight Association, of which we are members.
We encourage all our customers to read our terms and conditions in full however we do understand that terms and conditions for most companies can be overly worded so according to the UK Governments best practice guide we have summarised the key points which we feel better explain, in plain English, the key points under which we trade.
Key points on Limited Liability and Our Enhanced Liability Protection
Our MoveProtect Enhanced Liability Shipment Protection is provided through our specialist insurance brokers Basil Fry & Company. A brief summary of key points of cover as follows:
Limited Liability and Protection for your Vehicle
In the car shipping industry, limited liability is standard practice because the shipping company does not know the value of a customer's vehicle. In most cases our limited liability will not cover the value of your vehicle in the event of loss or damage.
In order to protect your vehicle from the vagaries of international transport we therefore advise that shipment protection / insurance is mandatory for all vehicles booked with our company.
Exclusions
Our MoveProtect Policy is to cover customer’s property against loss or damage whilst being moved and/or stored. This excludes loss or damage resulting from such things as wear & tear, gradual deterioration, insects, moth, vermin, rust, mildew, climatic or atmospheric conditions or extremes of temperature or depreciation resulting from repairs.
Denting, Scratching or Damage to your Vehicle
Taking a “Standard” or “Super” cover policy will provide protection against loss, theft and damage to your vehicle. A pre-shipment vehicle condition report is completed for all vehicles we ship. This ensures that, should your vehicle sustain any damage during shipment, your cover can respond to claims for repair costs.
Restricted Cover
When taking “Restricted” cover it is important to understand this will provide cover only in the event of total loss of your vehicle and does not provide any cover against potential damage.
Electrical or Mechanical Damage
Unless as a direct result of physical damage being sustained to your vehicle, our policy does not provide cover against any electronic or mechanical derangement.
Aftermarket Modifications and Non-Factory Fit Items
Unless notified to us in advance of shipment, cover does not extend to offer protection for any non-factory fitted or aftermarket modifications. If you require extended cover on any non-factory fitted items or accessories, you must itemise and value these items separately to your vehicle itself.
Personal Effects Shipped in Vehicles
We can provide cover for personal effects shipped in vehicles, but this excludes breakage, scratching, denting, chipping, staining or tearing of owner packed effects unless caused by fire, stranding, sinking, collision or overturning of the vessel or conveyance. Also excluding claims for missing items from owner packed receptacles unless an itemised and valued list of contents is supplied to us prior to collection or delivery to our UK depot.
Other Costs Incurred
Although your vehicle can be covered for loss or damages by taking our cover, we cannot be held responsible for any indirect costs such as (but not limited to) hire car costs should you be without your car for repairs to be completed.
Claims Time Limit
For vehicles shipped by us claims must be notified within 14 days of becoming aware, or when You should have reasonably become aware of the issue. If You fail to do so, You forfeit Your right to claim, unless You can prove it was impossible to meet this deadline.
A few other key points
Sailing and arrival times
At all times the company uses reputable, long standing carriers and whenever possible the company will endeavour to meet with preferred collection dates and first available scheduled departures from the UK. Notwithstanding this there are occasions when we are unable to meet an intended vessel, these include random UK customs inspections prior to shipment which may delay loading to the vessel.
Bad weather resulting in vessel delays or change of schedules or deviation to shipment routings by the shipping lines. Periods of high customer activity resulting in restricted space or equipment availability. Please check with us to confirm your anticipated shipping dates.
These are examples of circumstances over which we have no control and as such the company, like all other freight companies, cannot guarantee arrival times when shipping goods by sea and as such cannot be held responsible for any costs incurred due to late arrival of your vehicle. For example, we cannot compensate you for vehicle hire costs at destination.
Variations in Shipping Rates
All rates are correct at the time of quoting. Shipping lines can issue General Rate Increases or Surcharges at any point. If additional costs are implemented after quotation these will need to be passed back to the customer.
Overseas Customs Authorities. Your responsibility.
We have absolutely no control over overseas customs authorities or border control agencies. Customs authorities have the right to exam any goods crossing their borders and have no obligation to facilitate this process quickly. It is up to the client to properly declare their goods according to the laws and regulations in their arriving country. We cannot be held responsible for any changes that Customs authorities make to their procedures that may incur delay and additional costs for our customers.
Whilst we have overseas agents who can assist in facilitating customs clearance procedures neither they, nor 1st Move International, can intervene if a shipment is delayed due to customs intervention. Neither can the company be held responsible for any costs involved in such delays.
These conditions are the intellectual property of the British International Freight Association (BIFA) and are solely for the use by current BIFA members.
THESE CONDITIONS CONTAIN PROVISIONS WHICH EXCLUDE OR LIMIT THE COMPANY’S LIABILITY (CLAUSE 26) AND REQUIRE THE CUSTOMER TO INDEMNIFY THE COMPANY (CLAUSE 20) AND WHICH PROVIDE TIME LIMITS FOR BRINGING CLAIMS (CLAUSE 27).
All 28 clauses are reproduced below as searchable, selectable webpage text. The official BIFA PDF is linked above for reference.

The Company will only be liable for amounts exceeding Your responsibility. These terms form part of Your contract upon booking.
Exclusions – what MoveProtect does not provide for
Unless otherwise agreed in writing by a director or other authorised company representative, We accept no liability for the following Property (“Excluded Items”) and such should not be submitted for transit:
Batteries of any kind UNLESS factory fitted and correctly installed in the Vehicle.
Perishable items or those requiring a controlled environment;
Property likely to encourage vermin or other pests or to cause infestation or contamination;
Tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or vapes;
Mobile Phones;
Furs, animal skins, pelts or hides;
Living creatures or plants;
Any item that emits fumes or odours;
Any item which requires a special licence or government permission for export or import;
Any illegal item or substances or items illegally obtained such as illicit, counterfeit or smuggled tobacco or alcohol or unsafe items;
Money or currency of any kind, jewellery, watches, trinkets, precious stones or metals, silverware, deeds, bullion, bonds, securities, stamps, coins or goods or collections of any similar kind;
Combustible or flammable substances such as fireworks, gas, paint, petrol, oil, cleaning solvents, aerosols, perfumes, spirits, or compressed gases;
Property which is environmentally harmful or that is a risk to property or person;
Weapons, firearms, ammunition or explosives or parts, associated accessories, materials or ingredients of all kinds;
Chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents, toxic waste, asbestos or other potentially hazardous substances.
There may also be circumstances where Excluded Items are moved or stored by Us without Our knowledge. Where You submit any Excluded Items for removal and/or storage in breach of this Agreement, You agree that You will bear the risk of any loss or damage to such Excluded Items and any connected consequential losses incurred by You or Us. Our liability for loss or damage to the following Property is restricted:
Where the lost or damaged Item is part of a pair or set, Our liability, where it is assessed as the cost of replacement of that Item, is to be assessed as a sum equivalent to the cost of that Item in isolation, not the cost of that Item as part of a pair or set or any undamaged part of a pair or set.
In respect of theft of Owner Packed accessories, personal effects and tool kits:
Our liability is limited to a maximum of £100 per Item unless a detailed list of the contents is disclosed to and agreed by Us prior to the commencement of Our Services.
Proportional Reduction
If the Maximum Replacement Value You provide is less than the actual total Replacement Value of all of Your Property at the time of loss or damage, then Our liability will be reduced to reflect the proportion that Your Maximum Replacement Value bears to the actual total Replacement Value (“Proportional Reduction”).
For example: If the total Replacement Value of Your Property is £10,000, but You have declared a Maximum Replacement Value of £5,000, Our liability will be reduced by 50%. So, if £3,000 worth of Your Property is lost or damaged, Our liability would be £1,500.
General Exclusions and Limitations
We exclude and limit Our Liability for certain types of loss or damage as below. Please read these exclusions and limitations carefully. Excluding:
We accept no liability for the physical loss of accessories, personal effects and tool kits shipped within a Vehicle unless as a result of theft during transit and/or storage.
Electrical, electronic or mechanical derangement, except where this results directly from external physical damage caused by Our breach of duty of care.

Damage which results directly from Your Property being moved under Your express instructions against Our advice.
Any reduction in value or depreciation resulting from damage or subsequent repair or restoration.
Loss of data records, other than the cost of blank data materials.
Any Property confiscated, seized, removed or damaged by customs authorities or other government agencies.
Loss or damage to Vehicles caused by scratching, bruising, denting, marring, cost of repainting, rust, oxidisation and discolouration unless a Vehicle Condition Report is completed prior to the commencement of Our services.
Loss or damage to a Vehicle whilst being driven under its own power other than for the purpose of loading onto or unloading from the carrying conveyance or container or in and around Our storage facility.
Reimbursing You for Our Contract Prices or MoveProtect Charges following loss or damage.
General average contribution, salvage charges, or the additional cost of onward transmission to the place, port or airport of destination unless caused by Our breach of duty of care.
Any other loss or damage which is not reasonably foreseeable. Loss or damage is foreseeable if either it is obvious that it would happen at the time the contract was entered into, or where it is not obvious but We knew that it was a risk because (a) You notified Us in writing prior to Us agreeing Our Quotation; and (b) We agreed in writing to accept liability for this risk before entering into the Agreement.
Other than as a result of Our breach of duty of care, We will not be liable for any loss, destruction, damage, or deterioration of, or failure to produce Your Property caused by:

Our Maximum Liability
We will have no liability under any circumstances for loss or damage to Your Property over and above the Maximum Replacement Value or the actual value of Your Property either lost or damaged if this is less than the Maximum Replacement Value (taking into account any Proportional Reduction).
Why We restrict Our liability
In certain circumstances, We limit or exclude Our liability for loss or damage to Your Property. We do this because it is not always clear how the damage was caused or who caused the damage (e.g. where Property is not securely packed by You and this results in damage).
We also cannot accept liability for loss or damage which could not have been reasonably avoided. Please be reminded that MoveProtect is not a contract of insurance and You have the option to arrange Your own insurance separately.
CMR Convention
Where the CMR Convention applies and You opt for MoveProtect:

Our Acceptance of Increased Liability: We acknowledge the Maximum Replacement Value of the Goods as specified by You and agree to accept increased liability as per the terms of Article 24 of the CMR Convention. Our liability for loss or damage to the Goods shall be up to the stated Maximum Replacement Value.
Documentation: In compliance with the CMR requirements, Our increased liability and Maximum Replacement Value shall be explicitly stated and documented in the CMR consignment note accompanying the Goods.
Insurance: We shall ensure that Our insurance coverage is adequate to meet Our increased liability.
Limitation of Liability: This Agreement is subject to all other terms and conditions of this contract and the CMR Convention. The increased liability does not cover instances where loss, damage, or delay arises from circumstances beyond Our control, as detailed in the CMR Convention.
Our Agreement
The BIFA Standard Trading Conditions 2025 apply in full to this Agreement, save for, if You opt for MoveProtect, Our agreement to accept an enhanced liability as described above (and limitation as specified in Clause 26.A.i does not apply).
